Episode 9, 02/10/2006: "Not a Table Top Summit"

Gamers Club regular Matt joins Bobby and J for an episode filled with news, predictions, reviews, and the usual colorful commentary. Topics include more news on the DS Lite, a wrap-up (of sorts) of the recent D.I.C.E. summit, and Blizzard's reaction to a GLBT guild that popped up in World of Warcraft. All these stories and more, plus a discussion of what we've been playing, and yet another new entry into the constantly expanding Ultimate Library.

Very well done again, guys. My congratulations go out to Bobby, for finally getting around to playing what is possibly my favorite game ever (Symphony of the Night).

With regard to the early Castlevania games, I have to agree that they are ridiculous-hard by today's standards. I managed to beat the original when I was eight or nine thanks to independently discovering the Holy Water glitch (if you connect any enemy in the game with it just right they freeze in their tracks as it damages them - it was the only way I could beat Death or Dracula II) and around the same time I managed to get to Death in Cv III but I could never beat him (after I lost that far in I never mustered up the endurance to make it that far again, even with the password feature).

I guess the reason I could do that when I was younger is thanks to an uncharistic attention span, my own gaming endurance, and the fact that all of the first five Castlevania games rely extremely heavily on pattern recognition. The Zelda, Mario, Megaman, and Castlevania games were my favorites as a kid, so I guess you have Simon and Trevor Belmont to thank in part for me listening to you.

And secondly, about the AIAS wards, your coverage of it was rather excellent, but you forgot one thing - the AIAS Hall of Fame. They induct a gaming visionary into their HoF every year, usually the December before the show. This year it was Richard "Lord British" Garriot. All nine inductees are listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIAS_Hall_of_Fame . It's a pretty interesting list, and I feel that all of the HoF members are worthy gaming-world celebrities (except for Molyneux and Hawkins, but that's just my personal feeling).

So yeah, keep up the good work, fellas!

Yeah...Zach Braff was the original Chicken Little. I wonder who's going to do the voice of Piglet in KH2, since Disney has yet to announce a successor to the late John Fiedler. :(

Yeah...regarding the multiplayer/single player thing, multiplayer gaming really didn't become really mainstream until maybe like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter or Super Mario Kart. Nintendo 64 is still arguably the best console in multiplayer. XD

I wish they would still have the videos about each of the Hall of Famers. The video for Miyamoto was bloody awesome. I've been getting increasingly disappointed with the AIAS awards the past few years. WTH @ Nintendogs being named as the best DS game of the year? Ehh...and considering they've awarded GotY to PC games 5 years in a row, I guess it's time they went to a console game again.

DICE fails. I thought FORZA Motorsports would have won Best Racing Game

I broke like two Gamecube version and a Nintendo 64 controller. I've been wanting to play the Nintendo 64 for the past few weeks, but I haven't had time. :(

I think Super Mario World had 96 exits, but it was so hard I wasn't able to beat it until I played it on the Game Boy Advance in 2002. :/ But I did hear about Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World. I saw somebody that had it, so I guess Matt isn't the only person to know about it. :p

Yep...another decent podcast. The ending is kind of sudden, though. I'll have to try to make an appearance...maybe for Episode 10 in the weekend after Hell Week #1? :p Or maybe you can bring the equipment to the meeting, so we can make the Wednesday meeting a Podcast-recording meeting.
