Episode 5, 12/09/2005: "Interactnessitivity"

Drew, a Gamers Club Member since its inception three years ago, joins us for this, our fifth episode. Topics include all of the flack the Xbox 360 has been getting since it's launch, what Nolan Bushnell is up to, a bit of Revolution news, and a boatload of other things. We also discuss how video games are covered in mainstream magazines, some new games that came out this week, reader e-mail, and we induct a more than worthy game into our ever growing Ultimate Library.

The Pong Clock definitely has an awesome concept, although I'm kind of skeptical of the variety in the actual matches.

Once again, another great episode, the highlight being the weird sound effect J told Bobby to make when Bobby remembers what he wanted say about the X-Box.

Anyways, I didn't really have an opportunity to talk about Wild World during the meeting. Maybe I can expand upon it there. One thing you mentioned in the podcast was that the world was bigger. I really wouldn't say that. Your town seems to be about the same size, except that it's not divided into acres, so there isn't the brief loading time as you move between acres like in the Gamecube version. Plus they've gotten rid of cliffs, so your town may seem smaller that way. However, it is true that the number of fossils and fishes and insects have expanded...by a lot!

Some other changes include the fact that your neighbors don't just move in with their stuff all unpacked anymore. They actually have to unpack, and it takes a day for them to do so (and you can't really interact with them during that time. ) And you can't ask them for a favor. If they have a favor they want you to do, they'll tell you, but they give better stuff for deliveries. There is room for a lot of customization of your character. You don't start out with a hat as you do in the Gamecube version. Instead, you'd have to buy it, or you can get a little manly blue ribbon. :p You can also get different glasses and stuff.

As for Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi works pretty well. The fact that you can only visit your friends' towns can be a bit of a bother, but there are certain places where people share their friend codes online. Another limitation is that there can only be 4 people in a town at once, which isn't really a problem if you restrict yourself two people you know in real life. And certain things cannot be done when you're connected via wi-fi. For example, you cannot drink Hot Coffee or donate something to the museum. And I've had a lot of errors during connecting. Either there's disconnections, or a strange error is preventing me from connectiong to a town.

But when you're connected via wi-fi, it becomes extremely easy to find villages. Usually they're wandering around your town and you'd have to scramble everywhere to find them, but when somebody is over they'll always be in their house, so you'll never have to run around frantically when somebody's over. And it becomes very easy to get missing fruit. All you have to do is jump to another town, collect their fruit, and go back to your village. However, there really is no co-op play, especially since bees supposedly never appear during wi-fi play. So I've found that most of the time, wi-fi sessions usually ends up with everybody standing around fishing or chatting with the awkward AC text. Although that's pretty much what AC is all about.

AC: WW is definitely worth getting if you're a fan of AC, and wi-fi definitely adds a lot of variety to the gameplay and should definitely be experienced at least once, but there are some flaws.

Yeah...annieways...keep up the good work. :)

Thanks for the update Leon - we'll read this on our next podcast to clarify/correct what we said about WW (which I may hopefully own myself by then!). I am glad you liked the freaky sound I made - it actually hurt my ears a little bit playing it back on my iPod after we recorded it. Anyways, thanks for listening, and we will for sure have to exchange WW friend codes once I get myself a copy of the game.
